Pigneto street art walk: the murals of Pigneto and Torpignattara

Pigneto and neighbouring Torpignattara are a free open-air gallery that never closes. Here are the murals not to miss, area by area, for a 2–3 hour walk.

In short
  • The heart of the walk is Via Fanfulla da Lodi, with the murals dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini and the locations of his film Accattone.
  • Torpignattara has the biggest works: the 32-metre Etam Cru mural and Nicola Verlato’s “Sistine Chapel”.
  • At ex Snia, on Via Prenestina, you’ll find murals by Blu and Jorit and a lake that appeared by accident in the middle of the city.
  • Murals change: some get painted over, new ones appear. These directions were updated in October 2026.

Via Fanfulla da Lodi: Pasolini on the walls

This is Pigneto’s signature street. Look up and you’ll see “Pasolini’s Eye” by Maupal (Mauro Pallotta): a huge eye of the director watching passers-by, inspired by one of his lines about beauty. Almost opposite, at the same height, is “Little Mary” by Mr Klevra (no. 31): the face of Margherita Caruso, the young Madonna of The Gospel According to St Matthew, painted like a Byzantine icon.

At no. 50 Omino 71 painted Pasolini as a masked superhero with the words “Io so i nomi” (I know the names); some guides report that it is no longer visible. At the same address, in 1961, the fake bar used on the set of Accattone was built. The real bar, with the railing seen in the film, is on the corner with Via del Pigneto; a little further on, at no. 68, is the historic Bar Necci, open since 1924.

Following Accattone

At Via Ettore Giovenale 101 is the house of the film’s main character, with plaques on the building and on the alley at the corner, renamed Vicolo dell’Accattone. Along the pedestrian stretch of Via del Pigneto, at no. 217, another portrait of Pasolini by Mirko Montano carries his verses “Non illuderti” (don’t fool yourself).

Come in the morning, Monday to Saturday, and you’ll also find the local market: the best time to see the neighbourhood as it really is.

More works in Pigneto

  • Via Fortebraccio: “Intersection” by 2501, a whole façade of geometric lines.
  • Via Giovanni Brancaleone: the triptych “Resistance: yesterday, today and tomorrow” by Aladin.
  • In the courtyard of Rosti restaurant: M-City’s robot and tired worker among the cogs.
  • Alleys and low walls: small works by Alice Pasquini and scattered stencils, best found by wandering.

Torpignattara: the giant murals

Torpignattara is the neighbourhood right next to our apartment and one of the areas of Rome with the most street art.

  • Via Lodovico Pavoni: “Coffee break” by Etam Cru, 32 metres high and considered one of the tallest murals in Rome. A man climbs out of a rubbish bin holding a cup of coffee.
  • Via Galeazzo Alessi 215: “Hostia” by Nicola Verlato, about 10 metres high and dedicated to Pasolini’s death. Locals call it the “Sistine Chapel of Torpignattara”.
  • Via dell’Acqua Bullicante: Diavù’s pop portrait of Pasolini on the façade of the former Cinema Impero.
  • Via Antonio Tempesta: two works facing each other, Etnik’s geometric composition and Dulk’s surreal animal.
  • Via Francesco Baracca: the large abstract mural by Sten Lex.

Ex Snia and the lake in the city

At Via Prenestina 173 is the site of the former Snia Viscosa factory. At the entrance is the mural by Blu, a mass of workers with two yellow figures breaking free; nearby, Jorit painted the face of Luana D’Orazio, a young worker who died on the job in 2021.

Next door is the Parco delle Energie with the ex Snia lake, a natural lake that formed in the 1990s during construction work: an unexpected green corner, perfect for a break.

Tips for the walk

  • Comfortable shoes and 2–3 hours: everything is walkable. Via Fanfulla da Lodi and Torpignattara are a few minutes from our apartment.
  • The best light for photos is in the morning; in the evening, finish with an aperitivo on Via del Pigneto.
  • Many murals are on lived-in buildings: take photos from the street and respect the residents.
