Is Pigneto safe? What staying in Pigneto is really like

It’s the question guests ask us most often before booking. Here is the answer we would give a friend, with nothing left out.

In short
  • Pigneto is a residential, working-class neighbourhood where families, students and artists live. By day it is calm and full of local life.
  • In the evening the bars cluster in the pedestrian area of Via del Pigneto: crowds, music and, late at night, the usual problems of any big-city nightlife district.
  • Via Arriano is a residential street about 10 minutes’ walk from the bars and 5 minutes from Metro C: nightlife nearby, but not under your window.
  • The precautions you would take in any big city are enough. The emergency number in Italy is 112.

What kind of neighbourhood is Pigneto?

Pigneto grew between the late 1800s and the early 1900s as a district of factory and railway workers, just outside Porta Maggiore, between Via Prenestina and Via Casilina. Pier Paolo Pasolini chose it to shoot Accattone in 1961, and you can still see the low houses, courtyards and small workshops of that time.

Today it is one of Rome’s liveliest neighbourhoods: families who have lived here for generations, young couples, students, artists and, in neighbouring Torpignattara, a very multicultural community. It is not a postcard neighbourhood and it is not built for tourists, which is exactly why people who want to see everyday Rome love it.

By day

In the morning, Monday to Saturday, the pedestrian stretch of Via del Pigneto hosts the local market. There are bakeries, cafés, bookshops, neighbourhood stores, children walking to school and older residents sitting outside. The side streets are residential and quiet.

For visitors, a day in Pigneto is simple: breakfast at the café, Metro C, and a few minutes later you are at San Giovanni or the Colosseum.

Evening and night: what to know

In the evening Pigneto becomes one of the places where Romans go out. Bars, wine bars and restaurants fill Via del Pigneto and the surrounding streets with tables, and at weekends it stays busy until late.

We would rather tell you ourselves: as in other Roman nightlife areas, late at night there is some drug dealing and anti-social behaviour around the pedestrian zone, and the local press reports on it. Residents have long been asking for more controls and the police are often around. For visitors who go out for dinner or a drink and then head home, in practice this usually means nothing more than some noise and bustle.

Practical tips (for all of Rome)

  • Pickpockets are the most common problem for tourists in Rome, especially on Metro A, on crowded buses, at Termini station and at the busiest sights. Keep your backpack in front and your phone in a front pocket.
  • At outdoor tables don’t leave your phone or wallet on the table.
  • Coming back late, stick to the main, well-lit streets. In the small hours a taxi is the easiest way home.
  • Taxis: only use official white taxis with a TAXI sign on the roof and the licence number on the door, or the radio-taxi apps. Turn down anyone offering you a ride at the station or the airport.
  • On the street, ignore people trying to sell you things or putting bracelets and “gifts” in your hand.
  • Emergencies: call 112, the European emergency number, free from any mobile phone.

And Via Arriano?

Our apartment is on a residential street between Pigneto and Torpignattara, about 10 minutes’ walk from the pedestrian area and 5 minutes from the Metro C stop. Restaurants and bars are within walking distance, but in the evening you come home to a street of houses, not to the middle of the nightlife.

Before you arrive we send you all the directions, and during your stay you can message us on WhatsApp about anything: the neighbourhood, where to eat or how to get around.

Is Pigneto right for you?

Yes, if you want to experience a real neighbourhood, eat well at fair prices, go out with the Romans in the evening and reach the centre by metro in a few minutes.

Maybe not, if you want to walk everywhere in the historic centre, or if you need total silence right next to the bars at weekends.

To get to know the area, read our complete Pigneto guide and the street art walk.
